Late night snacks : Restoran Sing Pao Dim Sum @ Old Klang Road

Old Klang Road has long been the link between most of the lower Kuala Lumpur for years before Federal Highway was built. The Lasting result of this is the long road is the many eateries that have been along the road some lasting for years while others made way for urban developments. In a recent post about RM3 Dim Sum Paradise along Old Klang Road it featured some of the best tasting dim sum available during day. Most of the dimsum at that time were basically age old classics done to the nearest form of perfection.

But what if you wanted something a little different? things that are more sweet than savoury? more sour than salty? or u just want to go on a food adventure without venturing too far. Restoran Sing Pao Dim Sum is where you want to head on over to.

The Humble sign lit up above the shop
DJ Grago and I have been a fan of this place since the 2nd quarter of this year. Our previous Dim Sum palace was taken over by a Chinese National that just blew the cantonese menu out of there. We both share a long history of stacking up dim sum plates to see if it reaches the height of a glass of chinese tea. Using the tiny metal saucers and not the big dim sum bamboo baskets that some shops serve.

This place is a great alternative to going to the mamak as its open late from 8pm til 2pm the next day. When you first walk into this place don't be alarmed by the cantonese speaking workers that speak better cantonese than some of the banana chinese people that I know. The service here though is pretty speedy and if your cantonese is as broke as an election promise by a politician don't worry, broken Bahasa Malaysia is accepted here. Here is the first mothership that hits your table.

Mothership #1
The dim sum here is prepared earlier and not made to order as some are. As you can see the selection  here is pretty diverse in terms of colour and various dim sums. I do not know the names to all of them nor do i claim to have eaten all of their different variants. For the sake of dim sum i will do my level to eat all the dim sum! muahahaha (okay cue ironic joke about wanting to lose weight here)

Each dim sum shop has their strengths and I have to say the steamed dim sum here carries alot more weight than their fried counter parts.

Mothership #2

There are however morsels of happiness. Lets start with the Steamed Dim Sums.

Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun

Various Dim Sums that made it to my table

Sweet and sour Pai Kuat
with pineapples even!
Something special about this place is this next dish is some Mango dim sum. Its fried with somekind of mee hoon pastry outside wrapped in some kind of crispy popiah skin with mashed mango and a small piece of mango inside. All in all this fried dish was not too oily this time. but it can be.

Comes in 3 pieces and cut into smaller pieces

Tiny morsel of healthy fruit at a dim sum shop :P

Restoran Yau Hau Fook @ Bandar Baru Sri Petaling.

In recent times, I have come across some family run eateries that have really fast service and have been in business for at least 2 generations. Yau Hau Fook opened in Novemeber last year and looks like its set up to leave a legacy for its coming generations. You can always see the family either making the drinks or through the clear glass window see them cooking in the bright-lit kitchen. The petite cashier always manages to serve my mom and me  promptly, and we usually gets our drinks and food swiftly. The dedicated table for all the relatives of the restaurant owner is usually filled with the younger ones hanging out either playing with their gadgets or eating the food there.

The lay out of the restaurant is nothing fancy but it is clean and bright with warm hues. Its air cond interior makes it a very comfortable place to visit on a hot day. Don't expect 5 star amenities here, but there is free password protected wifi available. The theme of the place feels like a cafeteria but only that the food is served to you rather than you having to pick it up your self.

The drinks are simply served in simple glasses while the range is a fusion of Taiwanese and local kopitiam inspired. Many come with the option of hot or cold (simply go there and look at the menu). You can't go wrong with their single laminated front and back menu which have excellent pictures that portray the yummy food with lots of English translations too. Its important to note that this place is not halal.

Tonight's dinner was the Signature Yau Hau Fook Hakka Noodles.

Contains moments of goodness, flashes of fun and
ultimately a yummy in your tummy feeling.
Now to the nitty gritty, The noodles were springy, the mince meat not enough, the char siew [roasted pork] not over seasoned. the vegetable which I think was choy sum[mustard leaf] (the picture on the wall looked like yau mak[ romaine]). The two fried wanton was crunchy and the filling was tasty. Okay, basically the photo over sold the dish just a little bit. But,  the taste is not bad and I would definitely have it again. I mean why not? you are basically having pork served to you in 5 ways. I forgot to mention the Chu Yau Char [Fried Pork Lard bits] and the tiny bit oil of the lard.

Signature Yau Hau Fook Hakka Noodles.
Pork prepared in 5 different ways

Honey Lemon Drink

Saw a Bubble Derp Smile on a glass of water.

Restoran PJ BARU a hidden adventure.

I was about to write about a harrowing experience about the dim sum I had for lunch today. But, I figured why talk bad about something you don't have control over. So instead here is a little snippet about a great place in PJ State. Anyone who has lived in and around Petaling Jaya especially those around PJ State would definitely know about this place. Restoran PJ Baru has been a contender in PJ state for great Chinese dishes to have with a group of family and friends.

The place is usually airy, and nicely ventilated with the overhead ceiling fans and bright fluorescent lights. One thing that usually catches my eye every time I go there is the Grill fish signage. Serving various fresh fish grilled and put on banana leafs the ikan pari (sting ray fish ) is one of the must try items here. Service is usually fast and prompt and of course it usually helps if you already know what to order before hand.

Here is a random list of dishes that I would recommend in no particular order.

Guiness pai kuat (Pork Ribs in Guiness)
Prawns, fried in various ways.
Namely,  Butter fried Prawns
Ham Tan Harr (Fried with Salted Egg)
Ham Tan Yau Yee ( Fried Calamri with Salted Egg )

Steam fish in soya sauce
Lemon Chicken
Fan Shi Mew (Stir fried Sweet Potatoe Leaves) in Belacan or Curry.

OK the list could go on and on if i don't stop here.

Now for the pictures
Clockwise from top Steamed Talapia fish with light Soya Sauce, Fried Buttered Prawns, Stir-fried Sweet Potatoe leaves with Belacan, Fried Pork in Sweet & Sour Sauce.

BURRRRRRRRRRRPPP!
