Restoran Yau Hau Fook @ Bandar Baru Sri Petaling.

In recent times, I have come across some family run eateries that have really fast service and have been in business for at least 2 generations. Yau Hau Fook opened in Novemeber last year and looks like its set up to leave a legacy for its coming generations. You can always see the family either making the drinks or through the clear glass window see them cooking in the bright-lit kitchen. The petite cashier always manages to serve my mom and me  promptly, and we usually gets our drinks and food swiftly. The dedicated table for all the relatives of the restaurant owner is usually filled with the younger ones hanging out either playing with their gadgets or eating the food there.

The lay out of the restaurant is nothing fancy but it is clean and bright with warm hues. Its air cond interior makes it a very comfortable place to visit on a hot day. Don't expect 5 star amenities here, but there is free password protected wifi available. The theme of the place feels like a cafeteria but only that the food is served to you rather than you having to pick it up your self.

The drinks are simply served in simple glasses while the range is a fusion of Taiwanese and local kopitiam inspired. Many come with the option of hot or cold (simply go there and look at the menu). You can't go wrong with their single laminated front and back menu which have excellent pictures that portray the yummy food with lots of English translations too. Its important to note that this place is not halal.

Tonight's dinner was the Signature Yau Hau Fook Hakka Noodles.

Contains moments of goodness, flashes of fun and
ultimately a yummy in your tummy feeling.
Now to the nitty gritty, The noodles were springy, the mince meat not enough, the char siew [roasted pork] not over seasoned. the vegetable which I think was choy sum[mustard leaf] (the picture on the wall looked like yau mak[ romaine]). The two fried wanton was crunchy and the filling was tasty. Okay, basically the photo over sold the dish just a little bit. But,  the taste is not bad and I would definitely have it again. I mean why not? you are basically having pork served to you in 5 ways. I forgot to mention the Chu Yau Char [Fried Pork Lard bits] and the tiny bit oil of the lard.

Signature Yau Hau Fook Hakka Noodles.
Pork prepared in 5 different ways

Honey Lemon Drink

Saw a Bubble Derp Smile on a glass of water.

Restoran PJ BARU a hidden adventure.

I was about to write about a harrowing experience about the dim sum I had for lunch today. But, I figured why talk bad about something you don't have control over. So instead here is a little snippet about a great place in PJ State. Anyone who has lived in and around Petaling Jaya especially those around PJ State would definitely know about this place. Restoran PJ Baru has been a contender in PJ state for great Chinese dishes to have with a group of family and friends.

The place is usually airy, and nicely ventilated with the overhead ceiling fans and bright fluorescent lights. One thing that usually catches my eye every time I go there is the Grill fish signage. Serving various fresh fish grilled and put on banana leafs the ikan pari (sting ray fish ) is one of the must try items here. Service is usually fast and prompt and of course it usually helps if you already know what to order before hand.

Here is a random list of dishes that I would recommend in no particular order.

Guiness pai kuat (Pork Ribs in Guiness)
Prawns, fried in various ways.
Namely,  Butter fried Prawns
Ham Tan Harr (Fried with Salted Egg)
Ham Tan Yau Yee ( Fried Calamri with Salted Egg )

Steam fish in soya sauce
Lemon Chicken
Fan Shi Mew (Stir fried Sweet Potatoe Leaves) in Belacan or Curry.

OK the list could go on and on if i don't stop here.

Now for the pictures
Clockwise from top Steamed Talapia fish with light Soya Sauce, Fried Buttered Prawns, Stir-fried Sweet Potatoe leaves with Belacan, Fried Pork in Sweet & Sour Sauce.

BURRRRRRRRRRRPPP!

Restoran Ah Loy @ OUG : A food court in a shop!

I had a late dinner today and I completely needed to tell you all about this place. Its a very unassuming storefront that has the kitchen out in front where you can smell the marmite pai kuat( Pork spare ribs fried in marmite), Asam Laksa , Ham Tan Taufu ( Salted Egg fried with bean curd/tofu ) and watch the steam fish being carried out of the big steamer sitting on the gas stove.

Restoran Ah Loy (Air-cond) Best sign ever!
I love the fact that one can get still great local Chinese food that you would only usually get during breakfast.
Its like having one of those huge food court centres in one shop. So you can bet the quality control is a lot better. This place has really great friendly staffs that aren't too cocky or proud which my mom likes because there have been many times where we did not go back to that one shop that was rude to her.

A little history about Restoran Ah Loy, according to the Chinese lady that took my order, the place has been opened for about 50 years! A relative of hers opened and now she is the 2nd generation to run the business.
Of course this is what I gathered speaking with my broken Cantonese until cannot make it fail dot com.

And this is where the illiteracy  of the Chinese Language really shows. THE MENU!
The RM6 Menu! :P
The cryptic menu that I would need to decipher to access the treasures of OUG!
This is my only reason to go and learn Mandarin so that I can read this!

Now to the good bit more food photos! But before that a word of caution. Those with heart related problems should stop reading now.........................................................Ok if you are still reading this stop................................................................Seriously?! Ok, I know i would do the same hehehehe

I ordered from the menu that had some of it dishes written in English which was the Siew Yoke Curry Kuey Teow ( Roasted Pork in Curry Flat rice Noodles ). My mom ordered the Pai Kuat Curry Kuey Teow ( Pork spare ribs in  Curry Flat rice Noodles. Don't laugh at the menu, Its hard to even find places that have a menu in a hawker stall.

The curry is not too thick, there is the usual pork skin that is cooked til its soft not chewy, the Tofu pok, bean sprouts, cockles, and roasted pork that is not salty. There is a pork ribs variation of the noodles and you can even order a side of pork ribs to go along with your dish. We also had steamed romain ( Yau Mak) vegetables that also came out of the big steamer where the fish came out of as well hihih.

Some other dishes that were recommended to me by that nice lady was the fried slice fish with ham tan (Salted egg sliced fish) the yinyong pai kuat ( assorted pork ribs ) and Asam Laksa!

Casa Del Cocco - Suprising Gastro Delights, Away from the City's Bright Lights

I first came to know about this wonderful surprise after a friend of mine Edwin posted pictures of this place that looked really sheikh and dark. It was probably taken at night so maybe that's why it looked dark.  When I brought my mom there for Mother's Day for breakfast it was really welcoming and inviting. Their see through desserts/cake window showcase thing looked really refreshing even at breakfast. But the real reason I wanted to make my first visit to this beautiful surprise was because of its breakfast menu that starts at 8.30am on a Sunday!

Mom was always talking about having a nice English breakfast that served ham or bacon. Previously you would only get this at places where there was a high density of expats living in the area or high density urban upper class neighbourhoods like Desa Sri Hartamas, Mont Kiara or Damansara Heights. Taman Desa has been known to be the quiet Beverly Hills of long ago but since the introduction of all these other high rise developments, Taman Desa has been out of the limelight. However, in recent years there has been a maturity in the state of financial well being in Taman Desa. No its not the Hamptons of the east, but maybe everyone's safe deposits, insurance endowment plans all finally matured. There is one rumour that alot of auditors, accountants and remisiers live in Taman Desa. But this isn't a Blog about  urban development and financial news.

The breakfast menu says it starts at 8.30am on Sunday. The top 3 big ticket Items are the Big Breakfast, Light and Easy and one more that I forgot. I will update this after my next visit. The Big Breakfast set priced at RM28 (No GST or Service Charge yet, So make sure you leave a tip) comes with a small glass of very fresh orange juice, a choice of coffee or tea, Fruit Yoghurt. The main plate comes with a Hungarian Sausage, Fried mushrooms, Tomato Salsa, Cucumber thingy, choice of poached, scrambled or sunny side up eggs. The Baked beans, that is the highlight of this dish, for me at least. Now in the menu it says it comes with streaky Bacon but asu can see its back bacon. This was pointed out by my Head Chef at home Mama Angela. Up to the point that she mentioned it I was completely satisfied with the breakfast. after she pointed out the discrepancies about the bacon all I could think was to come back again and ask for streaky bacon...yum yum.

Oh yes the set also comes with a slice of some funky soft bread (Foccacia & Ciabatta) and a little bowl of garlic butter!!

My Mom chose the light and easy breakfast which has 2 poached eggs, 2 slices of bacon ham more funky bread and the cucumber thingy I am still not sure what is it. It does however taste very refreshing. This was priced at RM18 if I am not mistaken.

As my mom said her plate was less colourful than mine, It didn't help that this is also a blurry picture. The taste though is really as it says light and easy.

We both asked to look at the main menu which seemed somewhat dilapidated but the prices remained the same. No Plus-plus and a whole lotta pork! yes its a non-halal joint. 3 things that stood out for me when I looked at the menu. Porkchop with gorgonzola sauce, Warm Rocket Salad and Pear baked in wine. Yes please stop drooling now I know it sounds delectable. Head on down there and try the pizzas from their wood fire oven. It looks cool although its placed in a not so camera friendly place.
The staff is abit young, not as highly trained but they are still quite polite. Although we were the only ones here at the time. This place has really horrible parking habits by the people who go there so remember to go there early to find a nice parking spot that is safe and free of idiots parking there. Also, the parking bays are a little narrow so it will also be a test of skill. Hope you all enjoyed  this little snippet of information if you like you could leave a message and tell me you experience with Casa Del Cocco.

Happy Mother's Day

Hawker Food Breakfast @ Happy Garden, Kuchai Lama #1

Its the eve Of the Chinese Lunar New Year and so begins the exodus of travellers back to their hometowns. Which also includes your local hawker stall food seller. Around Happy Garden there is alot of great eating places that speciallises in different things like Dim Sum in Sri Petaling, Fish Head Mee Hoon in Kuchai Entrepreneur and OUG has the most diverse concentration of Hawker food stalls some notable ones are the Pork Noodles shop which has a steady stream of customers til the food runs out.

Although all around Happy Garden there is great food. In Happy Garden itself you can be hard pressed to find great hawker food. Choices are limited from kopitiam to kopitiam. But over the last few 3 or 4 years. The hawker food sellers have upped their game in Happy Garden. Once there were many foreigners who cooked the food while their bosses raked in the profits without much quality control. But now the business owners are back at the helm cooking and some even manning the store by themselves. In turn this brought back all the customers to the koptiams in Happy Garden.

So everyday there is a makeshift market on top of the hill along Jalan Selesa (yes, it means comfortable road). Along these roads are also a very short row of shops with the older shops being on higher ground and the newer ones built on top of what was supposed to be the market built by Bandaraya but now its more of a parking complex with a row of shops and a few more kopitiams.

The shops on higher ground has only one kopitiam on the corner of  Jalan Selesa and Jalan Riang 7. If you are looking for Char Kuey Teow @ CKT ( Fried Flat Noodles )
there's this aunty that cooks it well. Don't mistake it for the Penang Fried version as that in itself is a whole different category of greatness. KL-lites like myself usually prefer to see more of something on a plate when we pay for something. That's not what you get when you eat in Penang. ( No Offense to Penangites as I Love Penang food very much as well ) So the focus of this Pint Sized aunty's CKT Is on the noodles itself. Most of the time the focus of the dish tends to be the size of the prawns or the freshness of the cockles. While I do agree it is important but there's alot of hawkers who do not do a good job in actually frying the noodles. Frying yellow mee is quite standard as I feel you can't really unintentionally over fry it. Flat rice noodles or Kuey Teow I feel is an art.
This aunty's recipe of ingredients includes one very different that I do not find in other CKTs. She uses a hint of chinese pickled or preserved vegetable ( Ham Choy? ) I am not really sure to cut the oil so that it doesn't feel so oily that I think really helps improve the flavour of the frying pan onto the noodles. I am a Kuew Teow fan so thats why I Love this aunty's CKT. However, there is another favourite of mine in this same shop.

Its the Kung Fu Ying Yong Noodles

The serving is huge even for me as I can barely finish it but I still do because its so damn nice. The uncle who cooks it is really generous with the ingredients of pork meat, pork liver, pork intestines and prawns... Ok maybe not so much with the prawns. But his pork is always cooked to perfection where it is soft and the intestines are smooth and almost slides down the back of your throat. His sauce also has less starch and more scrambled egg in it. Its strange to me because when you first dig into it the sauce seems thick but by the time u reach the end the sauce becomes diluted. Also, if you don't take a picture ( Like I did. )and you can take hot food the fried crispy mee hoon tastes awesome when eaten hot! He is also generous with the vegetables which is always fresh.

I guess being near the market is great because the hawkers can get their food fresh from the suppliers who also supply to the market. This in turns helps keep costs down and food quality high.

Since tomorrow is the 1st day of the Lunar New Year. I would like to wish you all a Happy Chinese New Year! Take care and drive safe and don't over eat!
